Measles is an acute,infectious communicable
disease caused by Paramyxo viruses. This virus
is filterable and may occur in sporadic , endemic ,
epidemic forms .
The Virus varying in size 150-300mm. Gene-
rally infants are in safe , since the persistence of
maternal antibodies in them , but below two years
the dangers are more -10% of all deaths in child-
rens below five years are of any complications of
Measles .All ages are affected by Measles especi-
ally in spring - both males and females .Incubation
period is 10-14 days .The transmission is of drop-
let infection .
The portal of entry of Virus is respiratory
mucous membrane and the conjunctiva . The period
of infectivity is 5 days after the entry of Virus and
lasts until 5 days after the skin eruptions appears.
In this prodromal stage 1-4 days , onset is
sudden , high temperature with coryza and sneezing,
hawking cough , conjunctivitis and photo-phobia ,
edema of eye lids ,hoarseness of voice , laryngitis .
The mucous membrane of mouth lesions known as
Kopliks- spot bluish white sports appearing surroun-
ded by a red areola especially cheeks .
The second eruptive stage usually 4-7days,
skin rash appears first on the face , neck , behind
ears progressing above downwards .The rashes
are red maculopapular .These lesions disappear
within 3-4 days . In immune bodies the rashes and
symptoms are less in severity .Even the cough
continuing , the general symptoms disappears - in
the third stage of defervescece .
Laboratory examinations are needed for
the correct diagnosis .Compliment fixation reaction,
Nasal secretion for epithelial giant cell and
Rubella be differentiated .
As in complications : Brochopneumonia,
Acute gastro enteritis, Croup , Bronchitis ,Intesti-
nal giant cell pneumonia , Conjunctivitis , Otitis
media Stomatitis , Mastoiditis ,Oedema glottis ,
Laryngitis etc.Also Inflammations of the brain
and Spinal cord , Pericarditis ,etc.
The eye lesions may ends in corneal ulc-
erations .In some cases may develops Myoca-
rditis , etc.Measles in adults is more serious
than children's .Secondary bacterial Pneumonia
by some Bacteria's may arising Abscess and
Emphyma .
There is no need of a Specific Medic-
ine for Measles .Only symptomatic treatment .But
be careful Any complications .And the possibility
Rubella , Serum sickness ,Drug rashes , Typhoid for
the differentiation be checked .
For example Progressive Encephalitis may
develop in one to six months after Measles in
immuno suppresed children's .
Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis is a
late complication of Measles developing 5-15
years after the acute disease .
The patient be advised Bed rest till 4-5
days after the fever subsides .Liquid diet conta-
ining milk and glucose is given .At the end all
cloths , Utensils are disinfected .
